Oil Slick Reaches Louisiana

Fidelis autem Dominus est, qui confirmabit vos et custodiet a malo. (2 Thessalonians 3:3)

Oil from a leaking underwater well in the Gulf of Mexico has started washing ashore in the southern U.S. state of Louisiana, according to the Telegraph.

The slick could become the worst environmental disaster in the history of the United States.

The event is feared to become worse than the Exxon Valdez spill.

Billy Nungesser, president of Plaquemines Parish, confirmed that a sheen of oil had reached the fragile coastal wetlands near the mouth of the mighty Mississippi river.

A blown-out well a mile underwater is leaking in three places, spewing 5.000 barrels of oil a day into the gulf - five times more than originally thought.

The leaks started after a drilling rig that BP PLC was operating exploded and sank last week 50 miles off the Louisiana coast.

The slick, which can be seen from space, now measures 100 miles long and 40 miles wide.

In an attempt to mitigate damage from the slick, BP has asked the Department of Defense if it can provide better underwater equipment than is available commercially.

President Obama has directed officials to aggressively confront the spill, but the cost of the cleanup will fall on BP, White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said.

I feel sorry for BP for this most unfortunate rig explosion.

We must advance our technologies at all cost.

My personal opinion is that we should not be too hard on BP.

BP will lose both money and prestige because of this disaster.

The job out there is very difficult and tough, but somebody has to do it.

As I love Louisiana in general and New Orleans in particular, I am deeply moved by this tragic accident.

The region had the terrible hurricane Katrina passing a few years ago - and now comes this ecological disaster!

The region is teeming with hundreds of species of wildlife, and is also home to a massive fishing and seafood industry.

I pray for all the best for you folks!
